I created this blog after the Tornado Disaster in Alabama to provide info to people who would like to support the cause. Please see links for info on churches and organizations who are offering assistance to families across Alabama. By following the website links, you will find more info on how you can donate and volunteer... plus drop sites for water, food, clothing, etc. Please see the list of suggested items for collection. So many organizations and associations are getting involved and mobilizing their efforts and resources to help the affected communities. FEMA
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) teams are out in affected areas. Disaster survivors can apply for federal assistance directly through Web-enabled mobile phone devices or smartphones at m.fema.gov. They can also call 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can also register online anytime at www.disasterassistance.gov.

POWER AND GAS

Alabama Power Co.: Call 1-800-888-2726 to report power outages and downed power lines. The company urges customers to treat every power line as if it still has power in it, and avoid touching those lines or any debris touching them.

Alagasco: If you smell a gas leak (similar to the smell of rotten eggs), leave your home immediately and call 1-800-292-4008 from a neighbor's home.

CELL PHONES

Verizon Wireless has mobile cell phone service centers in Tuscaloosa and the Birmingham area for residents to contact friends and loved ones. In the Birmingham area, they are at the Pleasant Grove Athletics Complex, 959 Fourth St., Pleasant Grove, and Hill's Foodland Grocery, 851 Park Road, Pleasant Grove. Open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, noon-6 p.m.

FOOD

Tastee Kitchen, 1324 Pinson Valley Parkway, Tarrant, is offering free food for people affected by the tornado near Tarrant. They need to provide ID that shows that they are from the affected area.

The Salvation Army is running food vehicles for first responders and for victims.

Mount Hebron Baptist Church, 503 Fifth St. Thomas, is serving food Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.

CLOTHES

Tide's Loads of Hope free laundry service will be in Tuscaloosa Tuesday at Bruno's, 2001 McFarland Blvd. East.

FREE LEGAL ADVICE
Thomas, Means, Gillis & Seay, P.C. is offering free legal assistance Saturday morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) to victims of the tornadoes, including assisting with the filing of insurance and FEMA claims, advising on landlord-tenant issues, and other matters related to Wednesday's storms. The firm's Birmingham office is at 505 20th St. North, Suite 1425, downtown. Questions will also be accepted via phone at 205-328-7915.

OTHER HELP

United Way of Central Alabama. Call 211. United Way will match volunteers with needs once they've assessed the situation.

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has a lost and found area on its website that might help pet owners catch up with animals lost in the storms.

The Moody Fire Department, 670 Park Ave., is a command center in Moody. If citizens in Moody need help clearing debris from their property, they should call city clerk Patsy Beard at 640-0302. Churches have offered to help.

    If you guys are looking for a place to send relief funds for Tornado Victims, let me know. We are trying to raise money for truckloads from Convoy of Hope. These truckloads will help the residents of Cullman, AL who have been devastated by the tornadoes. Here is a link to a video of the devastation:

    The trucks cost $6,000 for a load that would normally cost $40,000. Many Churches are taking up offerings this Sunday to send to us to help us get these truck here ASAP. If your Church can help, we would not only appreciate it, but we would send you back reports and possibly videos of what your funds are going to do.
